Born in 1935 in East London, George Carey left school at 15 and worked as an office boy for the London Electricity Board and served the RAF in Iraq in the 50’s. By the age of twenty he wanted to be ordained and after serving in London and Durham he was appointed principal of Trinity Theological College in 1982. In 1987 he became Bishop of Bath and Wells and in 1991 was invited to become the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury, serving 70 million Anglicans around the world. He retired in 2002 and was made life peer as Lord Carey of Clifton in 2002. The recipient of 12 honorary doctorates and author of 14 books, George (as he likes to be known) is an excellent communicator, loves engaging with people and has a self-professed love of chocolate.
