‘What do you do in the winter?’ - Mark Newton - Chief Executive of Worcestershire CCC

Friday 28 March 7:30 pm, Keynsham Cricket Club

Mark Newton

Mark Newton reflects on the county game today and answers your questions.

Mark Newton became Worcestershire County Cricket Club’s first Chief Executive in June 2001 following the retirement of Michael Vockins OBE who had served the Club as Secretary for 30 years.

Despite having a background in the Hotel & Catering Industry, Mark has followed a career in Sports Administration since 1983 when he became General Manager of the Thames Valley Tigers Basketball Club. Later career moves have included eight years as Marketing Manager at Surrey CCC, three years as Director of Marketing at Yorkshire CCC and 2 years as Director of Marketing at the Rugby Football League just as SuperLeague and summer rugby was introduced.

As with most Sports Administrators, his lack of playing talent emerged at a very young age so involvement with professional sport is regarded as the next best thing.

His love of cricket has been life long and includes a very mediocre playing career at school, university and club level. This love of the game extends to taking holidays to watch England play abroad whenever possible although it took 11 years, thousands of £’s and 13 Test Matches before he saw England win a Test Match abroad - in Colombo in 2001. The most memorable moments have been Matthew Hoggard’s hat trick in Barbados and Brain Lara’s world record 400 in Antigua during the early part of 2004.

Mark has been married to wife Sue (a Kent CCC Member) for 32 years and they are both allergic to children.
